How to freeze your camera on Discord
Discord picks up system cameras the same way Zoom and Meet do, so freezing your camera there is mostly a matter of installing a virtual camera and restarting the app. The one wrinkle is that the desktop app and the browser version keep separate camera settings.
The short answer
Install FreezingCam, fully quit Discord including the menu bar icon, reopen it, then select FreezingCam under User Settings › Voice & Video › Camera. Press Freeze to hold your last frame.
How to freeze your camera on Discord (Mac)

Install FreezingCam
Download FreezingCam and move it into Applications. It supports macOS 10.13 and newer.

Open FreezingCam
Launch it once so the virtual camera registers with macOS. It runs from the menu bar.

Fully quit Discord
Discord keeps running in the menu bar after you close the window. Use Cmd+Q, or quit from the menu bar icon, so it re-scans for cameras on next launch.

Select the camera
Reopen Discord and go to User Settings › Voice & Video. Choose FreezingCam under Camera and check the preview.

Press Freeze
Freeze from the FreezingCam menu bar icon during the call, and unfreeze whenever you want to go live again.
Discord quirks worth knowing
- Discord minimises to the menu bar rather than quitting. If the camera list looks unchanged, it never actually restarted.
- The desktop app and discord.com in a browser store camera settings separately — set it in whichever one you actually call from.
- Discord has its own camera preview in Voice & Video settings. Use it to confirm the freeze looks right before joining a call.
- Go Live and screen share are unaffected by freezing your camera; they are separate streams.
What about Windows?
Discord skews heavily towards Windows, so this is worth stating plainly.
FreezingCam is macOS-only today and we would rather say so than waste your time. A Windows build is in development. Join the Windows waiting list and we will email you when it ships.
In the meantime, the closest free workaround on Windows is OBS Studio: add your webcam as a source, start the built-in Virtual Camera, then select “OBS Virtual Camera” in Discord. Pausing the source or switching to a still image gives you a frozen frame. It takes longer to set up and there is no one-click freeze, but it works.
Why not just turn the camera off?
You can, and sometimes that is the right call. But a tile going black mid-conversation is conspicuous in a way a still frame is not, and turning it back on draws everyone's attention a second time. A frozen frame keeps the rhythm of the call intact. That is the whole point.
