Camera freeze extensions, explained

People searching for a “camera freeze extension” are usually looking for the simplest thing that will hold a still frame on a call. An extension is a reasonable guess, and for Google Meet it can work. For Zoom, Teams and Discord it cannot, and the reason is worth thirty seconds of your time.

The short answer

A browser extension can only reach video inside that browser. A virtual camera registers with the operating system, so every app can select it. If any of your calls happen in a desktop app, you want a virtual camera.

Why an extension cannot reach Zoom

A Chrome extension runs inside Chrome. It can intercept the browser API that a web page uses to request your camera, which is why it can change what a site like Google Meet receives. The Zoom desktop app never touches that API — it asks the operating system for the camera directly, and the browser is not involved at any point.

A virtual camera solves the problem one level down. It presents itself to macOS as a camera device, so any app that can list your webcam can list it too. One install covers the browser and every desktop app at once.

What FreezingCam is

FreezingCam is a virtual camera for macOS, not a browser extension. You pick it as your camera in whichever app you are calling from, then freeze the frame, loop a short recording of yourself, or fake a bad connection from the menu bar.

It is macOS-only today. If you are on Windows, OBS Studio's Virtual Camera is the free equivalent, and you can join the Windows waiting list to hear when our build is ready.
